Alcohol is an integral part of many peoples lives, it can also be the biggest cause of their problems.

If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you realize the negative effect of alcohol in your life and have decided to quit drinking, or maybe you are an active alcoholic trying to find out what the benefits are if you stop drinking alcohol. Either way, there is much to learn about yourself once you decide to stop drinking and the good news is that most of it is positive.

Here are 45 things you can look forward to learning in the first 90 days of sobriety:

 

  1. Your true friends will still be your friends when you stop drinking but it may take them a while to get used to the new you
  2. Life is not as unbearable without alcohol as you might first believe
  3. You are far stronger than you give yourself credit for
  4. Hangovers are a huge waste of time
  5. Life is fun without alcohol
  6. Time becomes precious
  7. You begin to find out who you really are again
  8. The desire for alcohol lingers for a long time
  9. You have more money
  10. Exercise makes a huge difference to your frame of mind
  11. Reflection is a good thing
  12. You discover the ability to think more clearly and argue less
  13. Just one drink is not okay
  14. Books are a great way to escape, relax and learn
  15. Sometimes you will miss the relationship you had with alcohol
  16. You will know if you were truly an alcoholic or a problem drinker
  17. If you were drinking to forget your problems, you will have to start working through them
  18. It is satisfying to begin creating the life that you really want for yourself
  19. The future holds endless opportunites
  20. Once you make it through a really bad day, you know that the next one will be easier
  21. Your imagination comes back to life
  22. You will feel proud of yourself
  23. You will become more sensitive to the needs of others
  24. You will become less selfish
  25. You must constantly evaluate your progress
  26. It is okay to say ‘No’ to party invitations and events if you are not ready for them yet
  27. You discover your independence
  28. Doing something for the first time without alcohol is the hardest. It gets easier after that
  29. Writing is a great way to express your emotions, thoughts and feelings
  30. Quotes and affirmations help lift your mood
  31. The odds of staying sober are against you, if you really want to stop drinking you have to get serious about it.
  32. You need to work on having a positive attitude every day
  33. Staying sober is your main priority but creating a new lifestyle is equally important
  34. By setting goals and working towards acheiving them, you can give yourself an opportunity to create a new life
  35. You must do everything you can to stay away from peer pressure and negative influences
  36. You don’t have to tell everyone that the reason for abstaining from alcohol is because you are an alcoholic, you can use other reasons such as ‘trying to get healthier’ or ‘training for an exercise goal’
  37. If you find out what your triggers are you know what to avoid 
  38. Getting organized is a useful way to clear your mind - getting rid of old junk, clearing out your wardrobe or filing your papers will help.
  39. Having a good excuse on hand is useful for leaving an event early if you need to
  40. Keeping a journal reminds you how far you have come
  41. No amount of drinking will change the way that you feel about yourself
  42. No one else can change your life for you
  43. You only have one life, you owe it to yourself to be truly happy
  44. It helps to write down how fantastic you feel on a good day and read it the next time you have a bad one
  45. One day at a time works best
