Is It Okay To Miss Alcohol?

If alcohol has been a big part of your life for a long time then it is only natural that you will miss it once you stop drinking.

This may sound strange to someone who has not been an active alcoholic, but when you are a drinker you develop a relationship with alcohol. It becomes both your friend and enemy in a bittersweet relationship. When you are happy you share your good times with alcohol, when you are sad, you turn to alcohol for comfort.

It is hard to put this into words but I miss alcohol as though it were an old friend whom I no longer see. I have memories that are both good and bad and they span a large portion of my life. Alcohol was not just a drink it was a way of life. Whenever I feel those pangs of remorse, I accept it for what it is, the end of one life and the beginning of another.

When you feel like you are missing alcohol, remind yourself that it is very okay to feel this way. You have taken something away from yourself that has been a huge part of your life. If you didn’t feel this way then you probably did not have a drinking problem.

I have 99 days to go and it’ll be 2 years since I’ve had a drink. I can go days without even thinking about it and then out of the blue I will get a craving – one beer won’t hurt – but thanks to sites like this and statements like one above that rings so true, I know I’ll make it 2 years and beyond.
